Summary of our January 21, 2004 Chapter Meeting

Key Indicators of Intelligent Systems Engineering  was the topic. Bill Austin presented a summary of the study report prepared by Bill Austin, George Muncaster, Jim Pennington and Jack Ring as a 100 day project. The study synthesized the ideas of the INCOSE IEWG regarding intelligent enterprises with the more then 120 person years of systems engineering experiences of the four authors. The definition of SE was taken as described in EIA 632 and represented by PET maps. The definition of intelligent enterprise was taken from the IEWG materials.

The authors identified nine key factors (and several clarifying subfactors) that indicate whether any SE project is intelligently structured and conducted. Also, these factors were used to assess EIA632 content to highlight 18 opportunities for improvement. Finally, a list of 'requirements' for an SE project simulator were prepared to support a joint effort with John Clymer, Ph.D., Cal State Fullerton.

It is intended that this report be used by several practitioners to assess actual SE projects. We are interested in the conclusions that vette the Key Indicators and do not need to know any proprietary results describing the projects. Two practitioners volunteered at the meeting. We would like to have 10 to 20 assessments. Anyone else interested in using the report to assess their projects is invited to contact Jack Ring at jring@amug.org.
