As our region focuses on economic recovery, so too does this year’s conference.  Our theme this year is Engineering and Innovation: Catalysts for Economic Growth.  Keynotes, breakout sessions and the panel discussion will explore how technological innovation will play a vital role in the prosperity of our region and our industry. This is a unique opportunity to network and share information with your industry colleagues.  This year’s exciting program includes:
- Opening Keynote Speaker: Michael DeAloia, LNE Group and Former Tech Czar for the City of Cleveland
    Presentation: Regional Economic Development Trends
- Lunch Keynote Speaker: Ray Leach, CEO, JumpStart, Inc.
Presentation: Investing in Innovation for Economic Prosperity
- Closing Panel Discussion: Implementing Sustainable Business Practices: The Infinite R.O.I.
- Dynamic track sessions featuring topics relevant to Emerging Technology, Sustainable Solutions and Facility Management.
- New for 2010: Power Networking Session, led by Donald Wayne McLeod, Founder and Owner of LISTEN UP, LLC to ensure participants make the most of their conference connections.  This year, we’re also pleased to introduce the Innovations in Technical Education Award, honoring organization/s for excellence in STEM education.
- Nearly two hours built into the conference schedule for networking and visiting exhibit booths, to allow ample opportunity to connect with current and potential clients.

September 21, 2010    Chapter Meeting - Paul Mathews gave a presentation on Design of Experiments and how it can complement Systems Engineering

Abstract for the presentation by Paul Mathews:

An Introduction to Design of Experiments and Applications in Systems Engineering.  The usual approach to testing in systems engineering, testing one variable at a time (OVAT), results in a long program of testing that can't resolve interactions between variables. The Design of Experiments (DOE) method, developed for manufacturing but in widespread use in science and engineering, is capable of reducing the number of tests that have to be performed while simultaneously resolving variable interactions resulting in reduced testing time and more robust test results. Paul Mathews, a local consultant and trainer, will present an overview of DOE methods, demonstrate the use of DOE with an engineering case study, and then lead a discussion on the potential applications of DOE methods to testing in systems engineering.

Paul Mathews is president of Mathews Malnar and Bailey, Inc., a provider of quality engineering and applied statistical consulting and training services for R&D, product, process, and manufacturing engineering organizations. Mathews Malnar and Bailey, Inc. also develops custom software to automate lab and data acquisition systems. Paul has almost 30 years of experience as an engineer, scientist, professor, and consultant. He holds B.S. and M.S. degrees in physics from Miami University and Case Western Reserve University, respectively. Paul also holds ten patents and is the author of two books: Design of Experiments with MINITAB and Sample Size Calculations: Practical Methods for Engineers and Scientists. Paul is a member of the American Statistical Association and a senior member of the American Society for Quality. In his free time, Paul races and cruises his sailboat Whitehawk on Lake Erie with his wife Kathy.
June 29, 2010 Chapter Meeting - Eric Honour, former INCOSE President gave a presentation on system engineering return on investment.

Abstract:  Systems engineering is believed to have high value in the development of complex systems, but until recently there has been little data to quantify that value.  Now, Eric Honour is presenting the results of over a decade of research into the quantified value of SE.  These major results, based on interviews with 51 programs, show the statistically proven relationships between systems engineering (SE) activities and the technical, schedule and cost success of programs. The results show that nearly all SE activities correlate with better project success, and provides detailed values that begin to answer how much is enough.  Results also show, somewhat surprisingly, that current SE activities do not correlate with the technical quality of the product systems.  You won’t want to miss this truly seminal information!
