Panel Session on "Systems Engineering & Hospitals of the Future:

Challenging the Status Quo"

Abstract. This panel discusses experiences of panelists in the area of integrating medical technology (modalities, devices), medical departments, and information technology to pave the way for the future of medical care: a truly integrated system of medicine and technology. The goal being to increase the effectiveness of the care provider's role in caring for the patient by reducing clinical errors, decreasing administrative overhead, and enabling seamless access to information from the moment a patient is registered to the moment the patient leaves the hospital.

Biography. John Zaleski is an Advisory Analyst with Siemens Medical Solutions Health Services in Malvern, PA. He presently directs the Modality Integration Laboratory at Siemens Health Services, which is focused on the integration of medical modalities with hospital enterprise-based electronic patient records. Dr. Zaleski completed his graduate work in systems engineering at the University of Pennsylvania where he specialized in post-operative respiratory recovery research at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center. Scholarly research includes over a dozen refereed articles in research journals and proceedings, and over a dozen patent filings.
