Keys to Successful MBSE Implementation in DoD Programs

Abstract

In recent years, the Department of Defense (DoD) has begun to emphasize the utilization of Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) within the acquisition lifecycle. According to the International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE), MBSE is defined as “The formalized application of modeling to support system requirements, design, analysis, verification and validation activities beginning in the conceptual design phase and continuing throughout development and later life cycle phases.” There are numerous advantages to MBSE if implemented properly. However, if MBSE is improperly stood up in a program, it can prove to be costly and time-consuming with little to no benefits to involved parties. This paper focuses on the keys to ensuring successful execution of MBSE. There are four key tenants that must be understood: 1) Comprehensive definition of MBSE for DoD Applications; 2) MBSE differences between government and industry; 3) Influencing culture change at all levels; and 4) Keys to enabling early implementation within the Acquisition lifecycle.
