    January 2007 Chapter Meeting:

Jack Macris, Resident Administrator, Acting Site Director,
    Florida Institute of Technology

Jack Macris, Resident Administrator for the Florida Institute of Technology will be speaking on the graduate programs available locally and through the distance learning program.

Florida Institute of Technology is ranked among the top public and private national universities according to America's Best Colleges 2000 College Guide published by U.S. News and World Report.

The Redstone Graduate Center has provided graduate education in business and management to individuals in the Huntsville area since 1976. The center offers both graduate degree and professional development programs. Live classes are offered evenings and weekends to allow working professionals an opportunity to maintain professional and technical competence while earning a graduate degree or certificate without career interruption. Distance learning courses are offered via the Internet for those who cannot attend live classes. The programs are available to all who meet the admission requirements of the university.

Because of the moderate size of the student body, class size is relatively small. Students at Florida Tech are treated as individuals, not merely numbers. Each incoming student is assigned a graduate advisor to assist the student in formulating a graduate program plan to meet the individual needs of each student.

Each graduate degree program may be completed in two years or less. However, you may work to complete your degree program at your own pace. The majority of students at the center usually enroll for one course per semester, but enroll for two or more courses when their schedules permit.

The instructors at the center are working professionals with hands-on experience in the discipline in which they teach. All of the instructors have a terminal degree (Ph.D. or equivalent).

The graduate center is conveniently located in Building 5304 on Redstone Arsenal. Programs are open to all in the Huntsville area who met admission requirements of the university.

8:00 – 12:00          Software & Systems Challenges for Space Exploration
Presenters: Bob Savley, NASA – JSC; Mike Hinchey, NASA – GSFC; Mike Lowry, NASA - JPL
The exploration of space is now a world wide effort, possessing many dimensions such as; returning humans to the moon, sending robotic vehicles to very inhospitable places such as Venus or Europa, and pushing commercial, defense, and even academic self-build space systems to new limits.  What are the major software engineering barriers or challenges that lie ahead in each area?  Are there any shared problems and common solutions?  How do we make mission software more reusable, cheaper, and most of all, more reliable?

Securing Your Systems from the Ground Up – Software, Hardware, Networks
                                    Presenter: SA Hale, Teledyne Solutions
In this seminar, you will learn the benefits of incorporating security into the Software lifecycle. The risk of software compromise during the development process is inversely proportional to the level of security embedded in the software development process. Secure software is the output when adequate security protection is planned and implemented during the software lifecycle.  In addition, you will learn how to use TSI’s Security Audit and Penetration Testing Application (SA/PTA), to conduct various NetCentric system security activities.  SA/PTA puts 4GB of accessible materials at the Security Engineer's finger tips; over 24,000 files in 1,700 folders organized around checklists, databases, references, and tools.

                                    Co-Chair: Scott Reed, SEI
Presenters: Suzanne Garcia, Jim Smith, Bob Ferguson, Jack Van Kirk, SEI
This Workshop will explore the challenges of Systems of Systems Acquisition with regard to what the Request For Proposal should consider, developing the necessary measurement indicators for project management, and the consideration for those processes that will improve the Project Manager's capability for interoperable acquisition.

Topic: The New Joint Procurement Paradigm

Military Transformation to Jointness dictates - in order to fight ‘jointly’ you must learn to ‘procure’ jointly, ‘develop’ jointly and ‘test’ jointly.
Joint procurement has been a challenge with traditional military entities in charge of their own budgets and procurements. The closest we have come is the MDA ‘capabilities-based acquisition program’, and it took a new ‘agency’ to accomplish this.

We cannot afford a new agency every time we need to bring Services, Developers and Warfighters together.  Therefore, future joint system-of-system procurements will need a new professional adjunct to the System Engineering profession.  That new construct is called the ‘Mission Engineer’.

This Mission Engineer construct will be the single most important procurement paradigm shift since introduction of the Systems Engineering Process in the 1940’s.

    Instructor: Becky Reed
President and CEO of Reed Integration, Inc., Hampton Roads, VA

The International Council on Systems Engineering established its Professional Certification Program in March 2004 to provide a formal method for recognizing the knowledge and experience of systems engineers. The title of the baseline recognition of personal certification is "Certified Systems Engineering Professional, (CSEP)."  Certification is a formal process whereby a community of performing skilled representatives, such as INCOSE, recognizes that a person has achieved competency in certain skills. Certification differs from licensing in that licenses are permissions granted by a government entity for a person to practice within its regulatory boundaries. Certification also differs from a "certificate" that documents the successful completion of a training or education program
