INCOSE MG is a great organization with good opportunities to make a difference. Many have asked what INCOSE meant to me thru those years, and I have finally came with this acrostic : 1) Initiative . 2) Next Step getting involved is Outreach . 3) Creating an environment of inclusion thru membership. 4 ) Outcome driven with membership programs. 5) Special recognition to those involved. 6 ) Expect greatness from leadership thru investing in leadership training. I hope this year I will be joined by other members to take an INITIATIVE to do the NEXT STEP in getting involved with the youth of today by volunteering to visit a K-12 classroom on Engineering Week (www.eweek.org). Another opportunity to get involved is the EYH (Expanding Your Horizon) conference this year which will be Monday, March 10 at SLCC-Meramec. They are still looking for women engineers and scientists who can be on career panels to talk about their jobs to young women interested in pursuing careers in math and science. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you like to join me in this exciting opportunity. Get involved and let’s kick some Asymptotes for the youth of America !!!!!

It is a humbling experience and a honor to fulfill the role as President for INCOSE Midwest Gateway Chapter. As we develop an implementation plan for the year, a famous quote by Theodore Roosevelt came to me: "It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbled or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena; whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, and comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; who does actually try to do the deed; who knows the great enthusiasm, the great devotion and spends himself in a worthy cause; who, at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly. Far better is it to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs even though checkered by failure, than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer much because they live in the gray twilight that knows neither victory nor defeat." I look forward to working with everyone, to be there "marred by dust and sweat and blood" as we forge ahead and share in the "glorious triumphs" to come.

I am pleased to inform our Midwest Gateway membership that I have just received a letter from INCOSE announcing that the Midwest Gateway Chapter has been recognized as a Silver Circle Award Chapter based on our contributions and accomplishments in 2006. As we near the end of March 2007, I want to thank our members for their participation in our membership meetings thus far. Dr. Dagli’s talk in January on Methodologies for Understanding Systems of Systems was very well attended and we had an enthusiastic group for Ralph Lambert’s February talk on Applying Systems Engineering on a FIRST Robotics Team Effort. Once again, I want to encourage our membership to feel comfortable volunteering either ideas for future meeting program subjects or to participate as a meeting program presenter. Please continue your outstanding participation.

Now that 2007 has arrived, I wanted to take this opportunity to introduce myself to our Midwest Gateway INCOSE chapter membership and to thank Bob Scheurer, our out-going chapter president, and Bill Schoening, our program chairman, for orchestrating a very productive year with many informative programs and speakers that were responsible for well-attended chapter meetings. While I will work with our chapter board of directors to attempt to maintain the high standards established by Bob and Bill’s efforts in 2006, I want to encourage our membership to feel comfortable volunteering either ideas for future meeting program subjects or to participate as a meeting program presenter. The Midwest Gateway chapter belongs to its membership and I welcome your ideas and participation as we go forward into 2007.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH : K-12 - The Midwest Gateway Chapter of INCOSE is proud to sponsor three teams in the FIRST Robotics competition for 2007 with $250 cash awards each. (FIRST stands for: “For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology”. See http://www.usfirst.org/ ) This sponsorship represents an ideal way for captivating young minds on the excitement of technology and merits of Systems Engineering at the impressionable high school age. Thanks to three of our Midwest Gateway Chapter members, Lou Pape, Marcos Chu, and Teresa Camp for their involvement with FIRST on their respective teams and competing for our sponsorships. Let’s plan on watching them and their robots compete early next year and wish them much success in the various competitions.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH : K-12 - INCOSE Midwest Gateway Chapter is pleased to announce support to FIRST Robotics teams in the greater Midwest region. Midwest Gateway Chapter will be granting two $250 grants to teams in the area who has at least one mentor in which is member of INCOSE Midwest Gateway Chapter. Selection of teams to receive the award will be based on commitment from the INCOSE member mentor in the immediate past year of FIRST Robotics competition. About the Midwest Gateway INCOSE Outreach program: The Midwest Gateway Outreach Program is designed to foster interest and new relationships between INCOSE and other organizations, including other professional organizations and societies, academia, and prospective members. Upon request, interested participants will be provided additional instructions and systems engineering resources, including how to work more closely with INCOSE or become a member of the Midwest Gateway Chapter. Respondants are under no obligation to become a member of INCOSE.
