Speaker
Ms. Sarah A. Sheard
Description
Ms. Sheard’s 2007 paper on Principles of Complex Systems for Systems Engineering was voted “Best Paper” of its track in the symposium. In this talk she will look at a number of those principles and will show how they can actually be applied in common systems engineering situations. As a part of this she will give a brief primer on complexity, order, and chaos and show how standard systems engineering is best considered to be near “order” on the spectrum from order to chaos. These principles show how to supplement that standard kind of systems engineering when the systems get more chaotic and complex.
Speaker
Sarah A. Sheard is the Principal at Third Millennium Systems LLC in Great Falls, Virginia. In this capacity she develops courses to bring together the sciences of complex systems with systems engineering and she helps companies adopt complex systems principles on their programs. Ms. Sheard consults for MITRE in support of the Warfighter Network Integration project headquartered in Bedford, Massachusetts, and will be teaching two two-day classes on Complex Systems Engineering to MITRE in February and March.
Ms. Sheard has worked in systems engineering and process improvement for over 25 years. In 2002 she was awarded the INCOSE Founder’s Award for her contributions, which include over 40 publications, mostly in INCOSE symposia and the journal Systems Engineering.
Ms. Sheard is an INCOSE Fellow and certified systems engineering professional (CSEP) with degrees from the University of Rochester and the California Institute of Technology. She is currently a doctoral student in systems engineering at the Stevens Institute of Technology.
