Subject
Complex systems insights relevant to large engineering projects

Description
Prof. Bar-Yam will introduce the concepts of multiscale analysis and evolutionary engineering that are currently driving dramatic changes in major government procurement programs.
Specifically, Prof. Bar-Yam will describe some of the work his group has been doing in collaboration with the military (especially the CNO Strategic Studies Group) and MITRE in reframing the role of systems engineering in addressing highly complex integrated real time systems in the context of rapidly changing requirements.

Speaker Bio
Professor Yaneer Bar-Yam, author of "Dynamics of Complex Systems," is the President of the New England Complex Systems Institute, and Associate of Harvard University. His research focuses on developing complex systems concepts and relating them to real problems. He has given courses for: MITRE, Boeing, EMC, MIT and the US military (Navy, Air Force, Army and Department of Defense) and intelligence communities. He has taught about complex systems in Canada, China, Columbia, France, Italy, Japan, Korea, Portugal, Russia and many places in the U.S.

Professor Bar-Yam has developed the understanding of how the structure, processes and information flow of organizations can be designed to meet organizational challenges at multiple scales. The matching of complexity of the environment and complexity of the organization is an essential part of this understanding. His work extends from the fundamental development of complex systems concepts (the theory of evolution, the relationship of structure and function, and multiscale description) to intuitive and easy to apply rules of thumb in the design of organizations.

Professor Bar-Yam is chairman of the International Conference on Complex Systems, and managing editor of InterJournal. His book "Dynamics of Complex Systems," published in 1997 by Perseus Press, is the only textbook to address the entire field of complex systems.
