Technical Vision 2020. The first draft of INCOSE’s systems engineering technical vision for 2020 is now available in the Members Only area of the INCOSE website. Projecting anticipated developments and the future state of the art, the technical vision addresses the SE environment, systems architecting, systems development, systems management, standards, and education and research. Members are invited to download the draft Technical Vision as well as the comment and review guidance form from the Members Area. Comments are due by 15 September. The final version of INCOSE’s Technical Vision 2020 will be published by the 2005 International Workshop in January.

Systems Modeling Language (SysML) Specification v0.8 Submitted. In early August, the SysML Partners submitted version 0.8 of the Systems Modeling Language specification to the Object Management Group (OMG). SysML is a general-purpose modeling language for systems engineering applications that is being defined by an informal partnership of companies and organizations. INCOSE has been a key contributor to this effort starting with the development of requirements for UML for SE and continuing through design and implementation reviews. INCOSE members are encouraged to review the current specification at www.sysml.org and provide additional feedback prior to the end of August. The SysML Partners will incorporate changes into an updated submission scheduled for delivery to the OMG at their November 2004 meeting (held in conjunction with the INCOSE Mid-Atlantic Regional Conference in Arlington, Virginia, USA).

INCOSE Recognizes Excellence during the 2004 International Symposium. In Toulouse, INCOSE presented the following awards to recognize many outstanding contributions to our society and our profession:

  • INCOSE recognized five new Fellows in Toulouse: Sanford Friedenthal, Scott Jackson, Alexander Kossiakoff, Alexander Levis, and William Schoening. INCOSE Fellows are individuals with significant verifiable contributions to the art and practice of Systems Engineering in industry, government, or academia.
  • Bill Mackey received an Outstanding Service Award for his many contributions as Chair of the Technical Board for the last two and a half years.
  • The Washington Metropolitan Area Chapter received the President's Award for Outstanding Chapter, and the South Africa Chapter received the Director's Award for Most Improved Chapter. INCOSE presented fifteen Circle Awards (four gold, seven silver, and four bronze) to chapters for meeting and exceed INCOSE’s standards for local service and contributions.
  • The INCOSE-Stevens Doctoral Award for Promising Research in Systems Engineering and Integration was presented to James Benjamin from Stanford University.
  • INCOSE presented the first awards for outstanding papers published in the SE Journal (available online in the Members Area). Two papers published between 1998 and 2003 were recognized:
    • Armin P. Schulz, Don P. Clausing, Ernst Fricke, and Herbert Negele, “Development and Integration of Winning Technologies as Key to Competitive Advantage,” Systems Engineering, Vol. 3, No. 4, 2000, pp. 180-211.
    • Lee W. Wagenhals, Sajjad Haider, and Alexander H. Levis, “Synthesizing Executable Models of Object Oriented Architectures,” Systems Engineering, Vol. 6, No. 4, 2003, pp 266-300.

More information on INCOSE awards can be found in the INCOSE Hall of Leaders.

ICSE and INCOSE 2004 Region II Conference. The Region II Chapters have partnered with the International Conference on Systems Engineering to host the ICSE & INCOSE 2004 Conference, in Las Vegas on 15-18 September 2004. The theme for the conference is "Synergy Between Systems Engineering and Project Management." The conference will consist of keynote speakers from INCOSE and Project Management Institute, a discussion panel on the conference theme, presentations of approximately eighty papers, exhibits, and a day of professional development tutorials. Further information is available at www.icseng.info.

INCOSE MARC Call for Papers Extended. The deadline for the submission of technical papers for the INCOSE Mid-Atlantic Regional Conference (MARC) 2004 has been extended to 31 August. The theme of the conference is "Model-Driven Systems Engineering." Please consider submitting a paper to joseph.carl@harris.com, and plan to attend MARC 2004 in Arlington, Virginia, on 2-4 November 2004. See the MARC website for additional information.
