INCOSE eNote: News and Notes from the INCOSE Network
Vol 1 Issue 6 – 9 November 2004
Members can look forward to receiving a special delivery in their November mail. The next issue of INSIGHT, Technical Highlights from the 2004 Symposium, provides a stimulating glimpse into the breadth and depth of our discipline. With overviews of the symposium events, technical tracks, panels, and plenaries, this issue highlights items that reflect the excitement and value of the 2004 International Symposium.
This issue of INSIGHT also contains a very special insert: the first-ever INCOSE member CD. We trust that you will find this CD a valuable member benefit and systems engineering resource. This CD contains the many technical products developed by INCOSE -- publications, primers, and more -- plus information on member benefits and services. This information is compiled in an easy-to-use guide that is available at your fingertips. A great many members have contributed to this CD. In particular, INCOSE would like to thank Dick Wray for identifying and classifying the many products, and Steve Sutton and Gundars Osvalds for developing the product CD.
The deadline for the next INSIGHT is Tuesday, 16 November 2004. This issue, set to be published in early January 2005, has the theme The Intellectual Content of Systems Engineering. Published four times a year, INSIGHT is the newsletter of International Council on Systems Engineering. As such, we print information pertaining to a designated theme, status/information of INCOSE's chapters, working groups, and committees, and information of interest to the general membership. (We do not print papers.) In this regard, you are invited to submit articles that meet the criteria in the following categories: book reviews, people on the move, working group reports, industry news, commentary/editorials, chapter news, websites of interest, and advertisements. Please send all submissions to insight@incose.org. For more information regarding INSIGHT, visit www.incose.org/ProductsPubs/periodicals/insight.aspx.
INCOSE is seeking nominations for two prestigious awards to be presented at the 2005 International Symposium. The Pioneer Award is presented annually to one distinguished individual or team (whether from within INCOSE or from the community at large) who, by their achievements in the engineering of systems, has contributed uniquely to major products or outcomes enhancing society or meeting its needs. The criteria may apply to a single outstanding outcome or a lifetime of significant achievements in effecting successful systems. The Founders Award is presented annually to one distinguished member of INCOSE who has made a major contribution to INCOSE. The award recognizes outstanding individual contribution to INCOSE, either a single event or ongoing efforts. These significant contributions have positively affected the advancement of INCOSE or an INCOSE Chapter.
Nominations for the Pioneer and Founders Awards must be received by 28 February 2005. More information on these awards can be found at www.incose.org/about/hall/criteria.aspx.
The Fellows Selection Committee is now accepting nominations for new INCOSE Fellows. The Fellows Award recognizes (1) practitioners from government and industry who are applying knowledge and contributing to the practice of systems engineering in designing and acquiring systems, (2) researchers developing new knowledge that advances SE theory, and (3) teachers disseminating knowledge and developing the next generation of successful systems engineers. Nomination packets will be accepted until 1 December 2004. Instructions for nominations can be found at www.incose.org/about/hall/fellows/nominations.aspx.
The AP233 team is developing an international standard for a systems engineering information model that specifies the means to directly exchange data between systems engineering tools and engineering design tools. The team has agreed to hold a joint meeting with INCOSE at the International Workshop in Tampa, Florida to: (i) review module sets reaching committee draft status, (ii) assess the importance of particular module sets to the INCOSE community, (iii) present plans for module set verification to INCOSE, (iv) further communication with the Systems Modeling Language (SysML) development team, and (v) review the AP210 (Electronics and Circuit Boards) modularization to ensure alignment of details of requirements and of assemblies between the two APs. INCOSE individual members and corporate members with interest in the AP233 semantics and information model should contact David W. Oliver or Michael Dickerson, co-chairs of the Model Driven System Design Working Group.
Those who have not yet cast their ballot for elected offices on the Board of Directors are asked to mail them as soon as possible. Ballots were mailed from the Central Office on 1 October and must be received in the Central Office by 29 November to be counted. Vision statements and profiles for all candidates available online.
