INCOSE eNote: News and Notes from the INCOSE Network
Vol 1 Issue 7 – 8 December 2004
The INCOSE International Workshop 2005 is less than two months away! Groups are finalizing their plans and the meeting schedule is taking shape (please check the International Workshop website regularly for updates, as meeting dates and times are subject to change). If you are planning to attend the IW 2005 and have not registered, we encourage you to take advantage of the early registration rate and register online by 17 December. If you are a board, committee, or group leader, and have not submitted your meeting space request form, please do so by 10 December. Space is very limited and will be assigned on a first-come, first-serve basis.
The Tampa Airport Marriott is offering special group room rates of $139 per night (plus applicable tax) single or double occupancy until 7 January 2005, or until the group block is filled. A limited number of guest rooms are available at the prevailing government rate, if requested at the time the reservation is made (documentation is required at check-in). Visit the IW 2005 hotel information page for contact information and details.
If you join us in Tampa, make sure to include the Technical Infrastructure Workshops in your personal schedule. The purpose of the workshops is to enable members to work with the new Technical Leadership Team to ensure that current technical activities are properly reflected within the new structure, and that future issues and drivers are identified. The two workshops will consider these issues from two very different perspectives, so you should plan to attend both. More information on the workshops will be sent to attendees in January.
The European Cooperation for Space Standardization (ECSS) -- the primary source of standards for the European Space Agency -- has released version B of their systems engineering standard. This 174-page revision is a significant expansion of the original 66-page version published in 1996. Information on this standard and instructions for downloading a free copy can be found at http://www.incose.org/newsevents/news/details.aspx?id=25.
The Tools Database Working Group (TDWG) is making plans to upgrade and improve their popular systems engineering tools database products. With new leadership at the helm -- chair Randy Bullard (Air Force Institute of Technology) and co-chairs Tom Lockhart (USAF Aeronautical Systems Command) and John Hsu (Boeing) -- the TDWG is looking for INCOSE members interested in getting involved in one of INCOSE's most visible products. The SE tools surveys and associated databases were developed by the TDWG, in conjunction with the Requirements Management, Systems Architecting, and Metrics working groups. You can view the results by selecting "Find an SE Tool" under Quick Links at the INCOSE website.
The TDWG's charter is to "Deliver and maintain a database of Commercial-Off-the-Shelf (COTS) and Government-Off-the-Shelf (GOTS) tools of interest to Systems Engineering." Information about the TDWG is available on the TDWG web page.
Interested? Send your name, organizational affiliation, telephone, email, and fax to the Tools Database Working Group to find out more. A web-based organizing meeting will be held in mid-December to kick off activities prior to the upcoming International Workshop in Tampa, Florida.
This year's Conference on Systems Engineering Research (March 23-25 in Hoboken, New Jersey) has been collaboratively organized by the faculty at Stevens Institute of Technology, University of Southern California, and the Air Force Center for Systems Engineering/AFIT. This conference is being supported by INCOSE and NDIA.
This research conference features:
- Dedicated tracks for doctoral research papers and systems engineering case studies
- Research colloquia on architecture patterns, multivariate analysis techniques for SE, and COTS intensive system architectures
- An executive panel on “Value of Systems Engineering”
- An executive panel on “Deployment of Systems Engineering Practices within an Organization”
- Numerous invited presentations on system-of-systems architecting, formal methods for systems engineering and architecting, and research opportunities and requirements in systems engineering.
For more information, visit the conference website or contact Ms. Elaine Chichizola, Conference Coordinator.
The 43rd AIAA Aerospace Sciences Meeting and Exhibit in Reno, Nevada, USA includes a two-day "Systems Engineering Fundamentals" short course. Scheduled for January 8-9, this course will be taught by John C. Hsu, Ph.D., P.E. John is the newly elected Member Board representative for Region II and Senior Manager, Boeing Integrated Defense Systems. Those interested in attending can find more information at the conference website.
