INCOSE eNote: News and Notes from the INCOSE Network
Vol 2 Issue 4 – 24 May 2005
The Certification Program Office is now accepting applications from all systems engineers interested in professional certification. INCOSE recognized the first recipients of the designation of Certified Systems Engineering Professional (CSEP) in February 2005 during the annual workshop in Tampa, Florida, USA. The CSEP Program was established in March 2004 to provide a formal method for recognizing the knowledge and experience of systems engineers. Since then forty-two systems engineers from Australia, Korea, Scandinavia and North America have been recognized for their systems engineering competence.
“I applaud those professionals who have taken this step to show their commitment to test and maintain their systems engineering competence,” said Heinz Stoewer, President of INCOSE. “We hope they are soon joined by others with the same dedication to their profession and careers. Furthermore, we encourage organizations to consider the CSEP as a factor when selecting systems engineers for assignments.”
For more information on the launch of the certification program, see the formal announcement on the INCOSE website. Additional information on the certification program and details on how to apply can be found in the certification website.
As May draws to a close, so does the 2004-2005 INCOSE membership year. Renew today and continue to leverage the many benefits of membership including the Members Only Area, conferences and symposia, working groups, and the many benefits provided by your chapter. The German, Netherlands, South African, and UK chapters ask that their members renew directly with the chapter (points of contact for all chapters are shown on the Find a Chapter page). All others are encouraged to renew online using the information from your dues reminder received in early May (the invoice number is your member number). If you have questions on renewing, please contact the Central Office for assistance.
Early registrations and hotel bookings continue to flow in as we look forward to the IS2005 in Rochester, New York, USA. Register by Friday, 27 May to take advantage of early registration discounts (oh, what a difference — in price — a few days can make).
- Passport registrations are a new feature of this year's symposium. These allow you to attend any tutorial and any paper at any time — and all associated events. We will take a maximum of fifty, and half are already taken! If you are interested, now is the time to register.
- Hotels adjacent to the Rochester Riverside Convention Center are nearly full. There are plenty of hotels in Rochester, but if you want to be near the action, please book now.
- Riley Duren, from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, will be the keynote on Monday, 11 July. Mr. Duren has been the project lead for several, major space explorations, and will provide fascinating insights on past and future programs and the systems engineering challenges. Other keynote speakers include Hans Lindland (Statoil), James Stoffel (Kodak), Anthony Federico (Xerox), and Steve Easterbrook (University of Toronto).
- The technical program with an overview of all major symposium events as well as the hour by hour schedules is now available on the IS2005 website. While you attend fascinating technical papers, stimulating panel discussions, and intriguing tutorials, your family can take advantage of some of the region's outstanding attractions and museums. Descriptions of these highlights and enrollment information are available online at the social program page.
Much more information is available on the IS2005 website. See you in Rochester!!
Board, committee, and working group chairs should complete the meeting space request form and return it no later than Wednesday, June 8. The best availability for committee meeting space is all day Saturday, July 9 and Sunday, July 10. A limited amount of meeting space is available throughout the week. Meeting space will be reserved on a first-requested, first-assigned basis, so we encourage you to submit your request early. If you have any questions, or need further assistance, please contact Helena Johansson.

The theme Systems Engineering: Shining Light on the Tough Issues provides the framework for attendees from all backgrounds and levels of experience to address the tremendous challenges within systems engineering and its applications in the rapid-turnaround, performance-driven commercial world, as well as in academia and in traditional government programs. Share your wisdom, experiences, and perspectives by submitting paper, panel, and tutorial abstracts.
- Deadline for Tutorials - 5 October 2005
- Deadline for Papers - 7 November 2005
- Deadline for Panels - 30 November 2005
Additional guidance and detailed submission instructions can be found at the IS2006 website.
This year's Systems Engineering/Test and Evaluation Conference will be held 7-9 November 2005 in Brisbane, Australia. The SETE 2005 theme is “A Decade of Growth ...and Beyond” in recognition of the tenth anniversary of the Systems Engineering Society of Australia (SESA) and the continuing benefits that systems engineering, systems thinking and effective test and evaluation have in the world. The submission deadline for tutorials and non-refereed papers is 15 June. For more information or to register, please visit the conference website.
