Vol 2 Issue 7 – 4 November 2005
On 9-13 July 2006, systems engineers from around the world will gather in Orlando, Florida, USA for the INCOSE 2006 International Symposium. The symposium theme "Systems Engineering: Shining Light on the Tough Issues" focuses on the extreme challenges that systems engineers face in bringing products and services to market at top speed. Expect fascinating papers and tutorials in areas such as architecture, modeling and simulation, complex systems of systems, extensively networked systems, service-oriented architectures, systems and software engineering convergence, and much, much, more. With local attractions such as Walt Disney World, Universal Studios, and Kennedy Space Center, this is an event for the whole family.
Begin your preparations today to participate in this excellent learning and sharing experience. And don’t forget the upcoming submission deadlines: 7 November for papers and 30 November for panel proposals. For more information, visit the 2006 symposium website.
The 2006 INCOSE award process is well-underway. Help identify deserving candidates for these prestigious awards.
Nomination packages for INCOSE Fellows will be accepted until 1 December 2005. INCOSE Fellows are individuals with significant verifiable contributions to the art and practice of systems engineering in industry, government, or academia. This award recognizes practitioners from government and industry applying knowledge and contributing to the practice of systems engineering in designing and acquiring systems, researchers developing new knowledge and advancing theory, and teachers disseminating knowledge and developing the next generation of successful systems engineers. Complete instructions for nomination packages can be found on the INCOSE website.
Nomination packages for the Founders and Pioneer Awards will be accepted until 28 February 2006. The Founders Award is presented annually to one distinguished member of INCOSE who has made a major contribution to INCOSE. The award recognizes outstanding individual contribution to INCOSE, either a single event or ongoing efforts. These significant contributions have positively affected the advancement of INCOSE or an INCOSE Chapter. The Pioneer Award is presented annually to one distinguished individual or team (whether from within INCOSE or from the community at large) who, by their achievements in the engineering of systems, has contributed uniquely to major products or outcomes enhancing society or meeting its needs. The criteria may apply to a single outstanding outcome or a lifetime of significant achievements in effecting successful systems. Please refer to INCOSE policies REC-105 (Founders Award) and REC-106 (Pioneer Award) for additional details.

The deadline for the next INSIGHT is Tuesday, 15 November 2005. Published four times a year, INSIGHT is the newsletter of INCOSE. As such, we print information pertaining to a designated theme, status/information of INCOSE's chapters, working groups, and committees, and information of interest to the general membership. (We do not print papers.) In this regard, you are invited to submit articles that meet the criteria in the following categories: book reviews, people on the move, working group reports, industry news, commentary/editorials, chapter news, websites of interest, and advertisements. Please send all submissions to INCOSE INSIGHT. For more information regarding INSIGHT, visit the INSIGHT Information page.
Hosted by the Hampton Roads Area chapter in Newport News, Virginia, USA, this two day seminar will complement your preparation for the SE Certification Examination by providing an overview of each chapter of the INCOSE Systems Engineering Handbook (Ver. 2a) in a study group format. The instructors will cover all the handbook chapters in either a technical or management track. Pre-registration for this free seminar is required so register today.
The development of the reviewer database is progressing well, and there are now over 100 members registered to help review symposia papers and INCOSE technical products. However, to fully support INCOSE’s efforts, we are targeting at least 250 registered reviewers by the end of 2005. If you have not already registered and would like to contribute to lifting our professional standard even higher, send an email to INCOSE Technical Reviews.
With our current volunteer set to assume new responsibilities with the Member Board, INCOSE is seeking a lead for the INCOSE Connect support team. Help project teams, working groups, chapter leadership teams, and others overcome the challenges of distributed collaboration and leverage the INCOSE Connect site. Support effective communities of practice through just-in-time training, best practices, and more. Contact comms@incose.org to find out more.
