INCOSE eNote: News and Notes from the INCOSE Network
Volume 4   Issue 3, 11 April 2007

Welcome Cleveland!

An emerging chapter has been formed in Northern Ohio, USA.  The point of contact for this chapter is John Juhasz.

Notice to All INCOSE Authors

In the near future, INCOSE plans to release all INCOSE/NCOSE papers from the symposiums from 1991 to 2000.  We believe our existing author release notices allow this.  However, if any member does not want his or her paper released to all members and later to the public, he or she should notify the communications committee to withhold the paper.

INCOSE Foundation/  Stevens Doctoral Award for Promising Research in Systems Engineering and Integration—Applications Close 15 April

The purpose of this award is to inspire and recognize innovative doctoral-level research related to the field of systems engineering and integration. This award carries a $5,000 grant to the doctoral student along with a plaque and recognition at the Annual INCOSE Symposium.   Applications are still being accepted but the deadline is fast approaching.

INSIGHTShare Your Knowledge!  The INSIGHT Deadline is 1 May

INSIGHT, the newsletter of INCOSE, is published four times per year (January, April, July, October). INSIGHT features status and information about INCOSE's technical work, local chapters, and committees and boards. Additionally, related events, editorials, book reviews, trends, and how-to-do articles that are pertinent to the many aspects of a systems engineer's job are also included.

Do you have a submission for INSIGHT’s next issue?  The theme will be Academics.  The deadline for inputs is 1 May!  To submit your article or advertisement for the next issue, contact the insight@incose.org.

ISO/IEC 15504 Needs INCOSE reviewers

The Draft Technical Report (DTR) for ISO/IEC 15504 Part 6 is now available for INCOSE comments.  ISO/IEC 15504 is a suite of documents that support process assessments.  Part 6 is the Systems life cycle process variant and is based on ISO/IEC 15288-2002.  As with the previous version, we will be using INCOSE Connect to facilitate the review.  Send Dave Walden an Email at david.walden@incose.org if you need to be given access to the Connect site.

Attention Doctoral Students and Faculty in Systems Engineering:

The second annual Systems Engineering & Architecting Doctoral Student Network (SEANET) meeting will be held on 23 June, 2007, preceding the Symposium in San Diego.  For more information, see the announcement on the INCOSE website: www.incose.org

IS 2007

Did You Miss the 2007 International Workshop?

Did you miss the INCOSE’s International Workshop this year?  There is still an opportunity to share your knowledge and learn from other experts through engaging discussions and group forums.  INCOSE’s International Symposium 2007 (24-28 June, in San Diego, California, USA) is designed to give you plenty of opportunities for interacting with colleagues, especially ones new to INCOSE.  To find out more, the summary program for the International Symposium 2007 (IS’07) is now available at http://www.incose.org/symp2007/documents/IS2007-brochure.pdf

We invite you to spread the news: please share this URL with at least two friends who are not INCOSE members.  We welcome their registration.

System Safety Working Group starting up at the IS’07

Please consider joining us at the International Symposium 2007 in San Diego to start a new Working Group for System Safety.  The objective of the Working Group has been tentatively established as "to Integrate System Safety methodologies into the System Engineering domain."  Potential projects include:

  • Developing a process diagram of key System Safety Engineering tasks timed to correspond to System Engineering (SE) tasks.
  • Updating section 9.7 of the SE handbook, Safety & Health Hazard Analysis, to address System Safety engineering as a discipline.
  • Developing a System Safety handbook supplement to the SE handbook.

You are invited to contact the System Safety Working Group at safetywg-info@incose.org for more information.

Another Reason to Attend IS ‘07

Are you interested in System Engineering Certification?  During INCOSE’s International Symposium 2007, a two-day tutorial will be offered (sponsored by the Hampton Roads Area (HRA) Chapter).  This tutorial will provide an overview of the INCOSE SE Handbook to help prepare you for the INCOSE SE Certification exam.

Please see http://www.incose.org/symp2007/optional.html for more information.

Systems Engineering of Complex Systems Conference

INCOSE is sponsoring a conference on the Systems Engineering of Complex Systems in association with the International Conference on Complex Systems 2007, to be held in Boston, 28 October through 2 November 2007 (see necsi.org).

Recognizing the potential influence of complexity science on the maturation of Systems Engineering, INCOSE is soliciting papers on the Systems Engineering of  ‘system of systems’, ‘ultra-large systems’, ‘mega-systems’, and ‘enterprises.’  Of particular interest are areas where the objectives of multiple, independent, stakeholder communities collide.  Just a few examples are:

  • The effects on standard processes of not having the system under the control of a single entity
  • The social, cultural, or business influences on technical processes
  • The topics of Variety and Selection
  • Mechanisms of evolution in engineering systems
  • Systems ecology
  • Field reports on the use of Regimens in complex SE
