The PhD is still in the very early stages therefore the details of the research are yet to be defined.
The majority of my time so far has involved researching previous work on architecture frameworks including the DoDAF and MoDAF. The book ‘Using Architectures For Research, Development and Acquisition’ by C.E.Dickerson is a very useful resource for information on how the framework can be implemented in practice. Dickerson (2003) described a number of defence projects that have used the methodology and includes recommendations on how the framework can be used successfully.
After this initial exploratory stage of my research programme it is intended to focus upon some of the following aspects:
- The scalability of architectural frameworks, such as DoDAF, for applications below battlefield level on individual platforms. The purpose is to confirm the appropriateness of multi-level applications.
- Critically evaluate the performance of DODAF by applying the framework to the University’s system of systems demonstrator platform.
- Development of Mission System Architectures for military aircraft, particularly with the view to applying common architectural frameworks to embedded platform systems.
- To extend the previous work to consider the Hawk aircraft in various operational roles including pilot training and trials programmes, as well as in battlespace scenarios.
Biography
John Cleveley started his PhD in November 2004. Prior to this he studied Systems Engineering at Loughborough University. During this 5 year course he was sponsored by BAE Systems and worked in the Land Systems business on projects such as TRACER/FSCS (replacement combat vehicle for the military Humvee) and Terrier (an engineering vehicle for the British Army).
