Purpose
Specifically, the AWG seeks to:
- Capture and evolve the architecture body of knowledge
- Promote the use and practice of architecture principles in systems engineering
- Share best practices for the use of architecture in systems engineering projects
- Increase the practice of architecture in systems engineering within AWG members’ home organizations
- Expand the effort in architecture related standards and specifications
Accomplishments/Products
Much of the work of the Architecture Working Group has been presented to the membership during the International Symposiums. Access to past symposium papers requires INCOSE membership.
2009 INCOSE UK Chapter Autumn Assembly Plenary
AWG Co-chair Professor Dickerson presented a review of model-based methods for systems engineering in a plenary session of the 2009 Autumn Assembly
2009 INCOSE UK Chapter AWG Activities
Research was completed on the use of belief systems in the practice of systems architecting and support to ISO continued for the drafting and review of the ‘WG42’ standard for architecture descriptions.
2010 INCOSE International Workshop (IW)
AWG members met during the IW10 in Phoenix to review AWG achievements and plan activities for the upcoming year. Four presentations, including one from the UK Chapter AWG, summarized key advances made by the AWG in 2009. The AWG also supported the INCOSE MBSE Initiative by an invited presentation that expanded the Autumn Assembly review.
2010 IEEE SoSE Conference
A special session of the AWG was held during the 5th Annual IEEE International Conference on System of Systems Engineering, which was held from the 22nd - 24th June 2010 at Loughborough University.
Object Management Group (OMG)
AWG Co-chair Professor Dickerson has established an OMG Special Interest Group (SIG) to support the mathematical and architectural specification of model based standards and model transformations.
Recent Publications by AWG Members
AWG thought leader Dr. Mark Maier has published the 3rd edition of his book, The Art of Systems Architecting. AWG Co-chairs Professors Dickerson and Mavris have published a graduate level textbook and research monograph, Architecture and Principles of Systems Engineering.
Legacy Papers
Current Projects
Below are the major projects the Architecture Working Group is involved with currently:
ISO ‘WG42’ Support and Review
The UK Chapter AWG is continuing its support of the ISO standard.
AWG Support for INCOSE Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) Initiative
The AWG is continuing its support of the MBSE Initiative and is actively seeking AWG members to join in.
Collaboration with other INCOSE Working Groups
The AWG is currently supporting the Tools Working Group and has recently initiated relations with the Requirements Working Group.
Collaboration with IEEE Systems
Building on the success of the AWG session in the 2010 IEEE SoSE conference and US west coast IEEE meetings, the AWG will continue to pursue opportunities to collaborate with the IEEE Systems activities.
Architecture Knowledge Networks
The AWG is in the process of setting up knowledge networks related to the practice of and research in architecture. The first of these will be the AWG System of Systems Knowledge Network. This is intended to be collaborative with the IEEE. A second network is being planned for Model Driven Architecture for MBSE.
Internationalization
The AWG is pursuing the development of local chapter Architecture Working Groups and is actively seeking to work with INCOSE members and organizations who want to participate.
