Abstract
~~~~~~~~
Airline business is unique in its high-cost structure and high-revenue
stream. Profit margins are subject to a wide range of fluctuations,
inhibiting any speedy recovery from missed opportunities and mistakes.
In an ever-changing, competitive environment, air carriers cannot
rely on quick-fixes.
Systems Engineering provides a framework for tackling various
inherently-difficult problems in the airline industry. This approach
includes defining the system and its boundaries, incorporating the
interaction of various contributing elements, leading to the
development of the best representative model.
Understanding the working mechanism of a complex system requires
formal approaches. Systems Engineering has successfully been used
in commercial air transportation as a systematic way for undertaking
difficult challenges. Developing sophisticated yet pragmatic ways
for controlling operations and managing activities is central to
implementing the Systems Engineering concept.
