Systems Engineering and Project Management are often viewed and practiced as separate disciplines. This tutorial shows how effective integration of systems engineering and project management can provide the organization significant synergies and leverage for shortening cycle time, reducing costs and improving customer satisfaction.

What's in This Tutorial:

As strange as it may seem to us now, our predecessors successfully separated the intertwined disciplines of system engineering and project management. As a result we are saddled with separate disciplines and organizations, separate books and training, and the separate professional organizations, PMI and INCOSE, that operate with only token recognition of each other. Yet in practice these two disciplines are necessarily enmeshed and inseparable.

In the practice of developing technical solutions, on time, on cost project management performance depends on the correct system solution being correctly implemented, a system engineering function. Most of the project manager's resources (dollars and days) are applied to develop and field the system solution and system engineering processes are key to successful solution implementation and customer satisfaction. Yet at current project management conferences and in most project management training there is little attention paid to system management and system engineering. This tutorial will examine both the process aspects and the organizational challenges of integrating system engineering and project management.

About the Instructor

Mr. Harold A. Mooz, PMP, draws on 22 years of experience in System Engineering and Project Management and 18 years of successful consulting to both government and industry. Training and consulting have been provided to AT&T, Bell Labs, GTE, TRW, Lockheed, Emerson Electric, CIA, NASA, the DoS, and other Government agencies. Mr. Mooz has developed leading industry training programs and has trained over 5,000 high technology project managers.

Mr. Mooz is co-founder of the Center for Systems Management (CSM) and a second company, Visual Management Systems (VMS). He is co-author of a book, Visualizing Project Management, J. Wiley & Sons 1996, with the second edition to be available April 2000, and has published numerous articles on project management and system engineering.

Awards: Agency Seal Medallion, CIA, for pioneering effort in project management training.

Information

Pre-Registration is Required. Fill out and return the enrollment form provided. Acceptable forms of payment are checks, bank drafts, and money orders (sorry, no purchase orders or credit cards). Fees are payable to INCOSE. To "reserve" a space in the tutorial when paying by company check, remit a personal check and attach a note to hold for company payment. Pre-registration ends March 24.

Late Registration: Enrollment forms postmarked after March 24 will be treated as Late Registration. Late Registration received prior to March 31 will require a $15 late fee. Late registration received on March 31 and walk-ins on April 1 will require a $30 late fee. Late registrants are not guaranteed handouts at the beginning of the tutorial. We will attempt to make handouts available during the day of the tutorial.

Confirming Enrollment. Call 408.257.5501 if enrollment confirmation is not received by March 28.

Enrollment Packets: A confirmation notice will be in the enrollment information package. A map to San Jose State and the auditorium will be provided as well as parking information and a phone number to be used in an emergency. Course material will be distributed on the day of the tutorial at the registration desk. Registration begins at 8 a.m. The course is scheduled to end at 5 p.m.

Lunch is Provided. A one hour lunch break is scheduled. Lunch will be provided and the entree will be a selection of sandwiches with various meats and cheeses. Please list dietary restrictions on the enrollment form.

Cancellation Policy: Full refunds will be made prior to March 24. The registration fee will also be refunded if the tutorial must be cancelled or rescheduled due to circumstances beyond our control.
