International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE) San Francisco Bay Area Chapter

March 11, 2003, Tuesday Evening Monthly Program

" Traits of Effective System and Software System Architects "
Frode L. Ødegård
CEO, Ødegård Labs, Inc.

Program Abstract
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Despite all the emphasis on process improvement and better tools, talent still makes a huge difference in product development. In particular, some people seem much better suited to an architectural role than others. In this talk, we will look at some key traits that characterize good system and software architects. We are not yet able to present the result of any statistically valid study, but as a starting point we will present some anecdotal evidence of traits that do seem to make a difference. The evidence will be based on the speaker's experiences and on a recent informal Internet survey of system and software architects. We will discuss how to recognize the traits, what traits may be missing from our list, the degree to which the traits are universal, and how the traits can be developed and nurtured.
Presenter:
Special Request:
Our speaker for March is asking for input from us on our opinions of the key characteristics of system architects. Even if you can't make the meeting, please take a few minutes to share your thoughts by answering the questions on the website below:
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=18731173146
(Webmaster's note: This link is no longer valid.)
The speaker is also obtaining input on these questions from folks in other technical communities. If he gets a sufficient number of responses, he will contrast INCOSE perspectives with other industry perspectives. Please note that although this website says the survey is active starting February 24th, it will actually accept data now. The survey end date is the last date the speaker will be able to use the data in preparing his INCOSE talk.
