Topic:
Developing a Systems Engineering Curriculum to Meet the Needs of Today's
Ever-Changing Industries
Abstract:
Today's ever-changing industries levy continually updated requirements on
systems engineers. Systems engineers, today, are challenged with problems far
different from systems engineers ten or even five years ago. As a systems
engineer, how would one update his or her knowledge base and embrace the
inevitable requirements changes? As a student, how would one prepare for such
a volatile field? Universities throughout the nation have developed and are
continually improving their systems engineering curriculum to prepare their
students for work in the field. Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo is one university
that has recently offered a post-graduate degree in systems engineering. The
leaders of this curriculum, Dr. Crockett and Dr. Puig-Suari, surveyed
numerous companies in various industries, aerospace, biomedical,
manufacturing, and others, to gain an understanding of what the industries
are expecting of today’s systems engineers. They have developed a
continually refined curriculum to meet the needs of today's industries.
Students are prepared for not only the requirements levied on them by
industries today, but are equipped to embrace the unavoidable changes of
tomorrow.
Bios:
Robert Crockett
Dr. Crockett is a specialist in technology development and commercialization
of advanced materials and manufacturing processes. Prior to his joining the
Cal Poly faculty full time, he was founder and President of Xeragen, Inc., a
San Luis Obispo-based biotechnology startup company, and was a lecturer in
the Industrial & Manufacturing Engineering Department at Cal Poly since
fall 2000. He holds a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of
California at Berkeley, a MBA from Pepperdine University, and a Ph.D. in
Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Arizona. Dr.
Crockett served three years as an Assistant Professor and Director, Academic
Liaison of the Rapid Prototyping Center at Milwaukee School of Engineering.
During this period, he led the research efforts of a 27-company industrial
consortium to develop advanced materials and flexible production techniques.
Prior to his graduate work, Dr. Crockett was employed by McDonnell Douglas
Space Systems Company, where he was a lead engineer and Principal
Investigator on projects to develop technology evolution plans for the Space
Station.
Jordi Puig-Suari
Dr. Puig-Sauri is the aerospace engineering department chair at Cal Poly San
Luis Obispo. He received his bachelors, masters, and doctorate degrees all
from Purdue University. Prior to joining the Cal Poly faculty, Dr. Puig-Suari
was an assistant professor at Arizona State University’s College of
Engineering. He is currently a full time professor at Cal Poly, SLO. Dr.
Puig-Suari also leads the CubeSat spacecraft team and is the principal
investigator in various industry funded research projects. Examples of these
research projects include development of satellite cluster technologies,
multidisciplinary space technology education, and survey and analysis of
post-mission disposal. Dr. Puig-Suari currently teaches orbital mechanics,
spacecraft design, and systems engineering.
