Speaker: Dr Bob Parden
Chair of Engineering Management
Santa Clara University
Santa Clara, CA

Topic: Adaptive and SuperSystem Leadership
Our current air-transportation system has been identified as a complex system. The FAA is no longer "In charge". It is dependent on all of the sub-systems, airlines, control towers, security people, to optimize the total system--which isn't working very well. Each of the sub or adaptive systems (an airline for example) must not only optimize its own functions, but contribute to the optimization of the supersystem. Individualism gets in the way. "Looking Out for One's Self". The Tragedy of the Commons is revisited. Success depends on the leadership in the sub-systems.

Biography:
Bob Parden's bachelors degree is in Mechanical Engineering. The GI Bill paid for graduate degrees in Industrial Engineering. After teaching at IIT in Chicago, he came to Santa Clara to be Dean of the Engineering School. That has lasted for 28 years, and led to his present 26-year role as Chair of Engineering Management.
