Abstract:

Being able to routinely participate in virtual teams performing SE-related activities is a part of our collective destiny. We should aspire to an electronic-systems engineering (e-SE) environment that provides appropriate support for the types of virtual team collaboration that will occur on a project or within an enterprise. In recognition that not all collaboration occurs in the same way, this paper delineates and characterizes several models of collaboration and virtual collaboration - some of them based on sport team metaphors. We identify and describe different kinds of web-based support that may be advantageous to variations on the collaboration theme. In the process, we identify a variety of opportunities for innovation and integration - all with the aspiration of helping to invigorate virtual team processes and activities.
