Australians have established a reputation over many years as innovators, the Nulka hovering rocket, the black box flight recorder and the bionic ear are but a few examples of Australian innovation.

In the defence arena Australia has relied on off shore companies to provide the equipment and platforms which are locally integrated into a variety of systems and subsystems.

Australia's relatively small defence inventory and budget has made extension of service life necessary for many platforms and systems. The F-111 fighter-bomber for example, has and will have its useful life invigorated through major capability and air frame enhancements. This invigoration of platforms is in many respects unique to Australia.
