Australian Capital Territory

The ACT is surrounded by New South Wales and lies roughly half way between Melbourne and Sydney. The ACT was created by the Commonwealth Constitution Act of 1901 when the Commonwealth of Australia was inaugurated. One of the provisions of the Act was that the seat of government should be on land vested in the Commonwealth.

Canberra, Australia's capital city, is one of the world's best known fully planned cities. The impressive public buildings, its areas of parkland and bush reserves, its leafy suburbs and broad tree-lined streets have resulted from brilliant planning by its architect, Walter Burley Griffin.
