Melbourne Melbourne, the capital city of Victoria with a population of 3.3 million people, has been voted the most liveable city in the world. And for good reason. Melbourne has a life of its own. Vibrant, friendly, with a fervent spirit and a youthful outlook. Melbourne's appeal is universal. Culture, style, sports and history are just a few of the elements embodying the city's persona. Melbourne is surrounded by beautiful parks and gardens, an idyllic escape from the busy world of the city. A variety of native birds and animals have made Melbourne's parks and gardens home, promising sights and sounds to delight those enjoying a stroll, picnic or quiet, lazy afternoon This boot-shaped promontory separate Port Phillip and Westernport Bays and provides Melbournians with a beachside playground. It is a mixture of resort towns, varying in size and tourist development, and inland countryside which is still rural. As well as safe bayside beaches, there are excellent surf beaches, particularly along the stretch or rugged coast between Portsea and Cape Schanck at the end of the Peninsula. This road is a photographer's dream. At almost every one of its bends is a scene waiting to be shot. Jagged bluffs. White beaches. Restful fishing villages and sudden hills. See the spectacular temperate rainforest of the Otway Ranges. Pass through beautiful lush green farmland, steep cliff faces and rugged coastline. Long stretches of cliff faces and craggy coastline, long stretches of white beaches and sheltered inlets. Quiet fishing villages and seaside resorts dot the road.
