What does a panel consist of?

A panel consists of three to five volunteers from the Systems Engineering community prepared to present their views and to lead audience discussion on a topic of interest. One panel member is the Moderator, and the other two to four panel members are the panel presenters.

What are some of the panel topics presented in the past?

This table contains some of the topics that have been presented as panels at INCOSE 2000 and 1999 symposia. New panel topics are encouraged for INCOSE 2002, however topics similar to those previously presented will be given equal consideration as these are often popular panel topics and generally well received.

How many panel members are needed?

Preferably five but at least three, consisting of one Moderator and at least two Panel Members.

What is the Moderator’s role?

The Moderator chairs the panel session. The Moderator’s duties also include:

  • Act as the primary contact with the symposium Technical Committee.
  • Recruit the panel members.
  • Identify an alternate Moderator and reserve panel members, in case of illness or accident.
  • Submit the presentations to the Technical Chair.
  • Ensure the presentations are kept within the time limit.
  • Chair the panel session. Introduce the panel session (10 minutes), and be prepared to summarise the session (5 minutes).

What are the Panel Members’ duties?

The Panel Members duties include:

  • Under guidance from the Moderator, prepare an informal paper, which will not be refereed.
  • Prepare a 10 minute summary for presentation at the panel session.

What is the format of a panel?

The panel’s papers will be published on the Symposium website 30 days prior to the Symposium, to allow potential audience members to prepare for the panel. The format of the panel session will be:

  • Moderator’s introduction to the panel session (10 mins)
  • Panel Members’ presentations (10 mins each)
  • Open discussion from the floor (40 mins)
  • Moderator’s summary (5 mins)

How do I submit a proposal?

Use the Panel Proposal template and e-mail it to the Technical Chair, Dorothy McKinney. Please contact Dorothy at 408-742-8790 if further assistance is required.

How will my proposal be evaluated?

Panel proposals will be reviewed by the Technical Committee, particularly for interest to INCOSE members, relevance to Systems Engineering and the Symposium theme, and international appeal.

What sort of equipment will the conference supply?

Normal technical session equipment (OHP, laptop computer, data projector) will be supplied.
