The Maritime Museum
Located downtown at the Embarcadero, the Maritime Museum offers an eclectic mix of ships serving as museums: The Star of India sailing ship, the Berkley steam ferry, the tall sailing ships HMS Surprise and the California. Then there is the Soviet Foxtrot class submarine open for tours to those who have no fear of small spaces. The tall ships are not only museum pieces, but also take visitors out for sailing on the bay. Don't miss this unique opportunity.
Tip: Don't be surprised when the tall ships engage in mock battles with blood-thirsty pirates on the bay. Button-hole one of the docents or guides, and then listen to the many sea stories.
