About IS2008

On behalf of the Netherlands Chapter of INCOSE, and of the Region 3 Planning Committee of the International Symposium 2008 (IS2008), I thank all of you who joined us in June at the Jaarbeurs Conference Center, Utrecht, the Netherlands.

The focus of this year’s symposium was on how systems engineering and systems engineers can achieve balanced solutions for a sustainable planet. Technical papers and invited speakers examined ways in which the expanding scope of systems engineering application and responsibility can, should, and will address concerns about the impact of engineered systems and products on natural and societal environments.

Attendees of this year’s symposium seem to agree on one thing: this was unlike the events we have seen before. Many innovations were introduced, of which the sub-theme tracks, the tool vendor challenge, sponsored tutorials, and the pocket-sized spiral booklet are notable. Over seven hundred people participated in this event, originating from thirty-three different countries. This year also marked record-setting participation in the guests program.

Even if you did not have the opportunity to be present in Utrecht, as an INCOSE member you still can benefit from the event. The September issue of INSIGHT provides a glimpse into the technical content of the program and the activities of the working groups during an intense week. INCOSE’s publications library (i-Pub) contains an archive of the papers presented at all of the symposia to date, and will include papers from IS08 at the end of the year. For more photos, see the archived issues of the Daily Tulip. The tool vendor challenge has been updated to include solutions, just click on the menu option.

Thanks again to all who made this a great event!
Paul Schreinemakers, General Chair of the Host Committee

Quote of the month

As to methods there may be a million and then some, but principles are few. The man who grasps principles can successfully select his own methods. The man, who tries methods, ignoring principles, is sure to have trouble.
