| 05/13/2008 | On the Various Conceptualizations of Systems and Their Impact on the Practice of Systems Engineering We all have a tendency to confuse an object we observe with the conceptualization of that object. Most of us would not consider this to be a fatal flaw, but when it comes to systems thinking and applying this to systems engineering this tendency could have serious consequences. The object we observe that we call the “system” is not really the system itself. The system is really the “point of view” we take when we properly deal with engineering of what is commonly called “the system”. We will explore in this paper what it means to think of something “as a system” and how we can avoid the common tendencies that get in the way of truly holistic thinking. |

| 11/14/2006 | Uniting Three Families of Risk Management This case study presents how a government agency overcame difficult challenges to establish a solid foundation for the management of its three families of risk- program, enterprise, and joint enterprise. Establishing an efficient and effective risk management process in a single development program is very challenging- culture resistance to change and unwillingness to share information viewed as negative prevail. There is additional complexity convincing people to adopt a process that is part of the bigger organization and sharing information regarding their ability to achieve program objectives. Now convince two different organizations to share information with each other. The outcomes show how the process can be scaled, adapted, integrated and adopted across the complex systems and diverse organizations and enable program teams to identify, assess, and mitigate complex risks. For an organization aspiring to establish an internal or joint enterprise risk management program, these findings are a head start. |

| 05/10/2006 | NCOSE\'s System Engineering Vision 2020 The Systems Engineering Vision 2020 forecasts the likely state of systems engineering practice in the 2010 and 2020 time frames. Systems Engineering Vision 2020 is a forecast of the future state of systems engineering in response to identifiable key drivers. Emerging drivers and technologies are discussed and characterized. A vision of the state of systems engineering based on anticipated impacts of the drivers is presented for the near (year 2010) and far (year 2020) term. |

| 04/11/2006 | Mature and Secure: Creating a CMMi and ISO/IEC 21827 Compliant Process Improvement Program We have invested in a Process Improvement Program that includes compliance with the CMMI as well as ISO/IEC 21827, the Systems Security Engineering Capability Maturity Model (SSE-CMM). This presentation will provide an overview of the CMMI and SSE-CMM, the approach for integrating SSE-CMM compliant processes into our standard processes, describe the similarities and differences between the appraisal methods, present our approach for integrating an ISO/IEC appraisal with the SCAMPI method, and relay our experiences. With the growing emphasis on information security that is quickly becoming a way of business, this presentation will provide the audience with a practical approach for demonstrating their organizations’ compliance with an international security standard. |

| 03/21/2006 | Gerrit Muller - Decomposing the Architect: What are Critical Success Factors? Abstract System architects are scarce. If we want to search or educate potential system architects, then it is useful to know factors that determine the success of system architects. In this presentation we look at 4 areas: nature, education, environment and experience. We will make this areas more specific by quantification and illustration. |
