Topic: Robotic Testing of Automobile Automatic Safety Features
Speaker: Dr. Sam Harbaugh
About the Presentation:
Many car companies now offer automatic safety features. This talk will focus on robotic testing of three of these features; Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Automatic Braking (AB), and Lane Departure Warning (LDW). The talk will present the National Highway Transportation Agency's (NHTSA) performance requirements for these 3 safety features and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's (IIHS) extensive test facility which includes autonomous robotic control of both the car under test and a special purpose robot used as a target vehicle during the tests. Perrone Robotics, Inc. (PRI) is responsible for the entire IIHS test system including the special purpose target robot and the robotics used in the car under test.
About the Speaker:
Our speaker is Dr. Sam Harbaugh, who helped in the early days to found the INCOSE Space Coast Chapter. Sam served as systems engineer on the Carnegie Mellon University teams that competed in the three DARPA Challenges which were races between automobile based autonomous vehicles across the desert and in an urban environment. Most recently Sam assisted PRI in crafting the requirements for the IIHS test system.
