About the Presentation: The Drake Equation and the Fermi Paradox

It seems as if there has been an increase in the number of discoveries of new star systems that contain planets that could have the conditions to sustain life as we know it – or at least would recognize. This raises the question of whether or not there is intelligent or any other forms of life beyond earth.  We won’t know until we actually find such life or detect positive signatures that such life exists. This doesn’t mean that we can’t speculate on the probability of such life existing. These speculations have been around for a long time – at least since the ancient Greeks, and we continue to refine them.

In system engineering terms, this is called modeling – developing a model of a problem and then testing the model to evaluate possible solutions. This presentation will look at probably the most famous model related to the existence of extraterrestrial life.
