Brief:
\nDr. Javier
Calvo-Amodio's research focus is on developing fundamental understanding o
f how to integrate systems science into industrial and systems engineering
research and practice. The aim of this focus is on the design of organiza
tional processes that integrate to and/or enhance existing organizational
cultures. His research group\, Change and Reliable Systems Engineering and
Management (CaRSEM)\, works with Oregon&rsquo\;s industry\, state and fed
eral agencies\, and other professional societies.
\nDefining organiza
tions as purposeful human activity systems opens a holistic approach to or
ganizational design that considers the interactions between physical and c
onceptual systems. From this perspective is possible to design organizatio
nal processes that provide sufficient level of centralized organizational
control and cohesion while at the same time enabling autonomy and adaptabi
lity to specific units. In this presentation\, Dr. Calvo-Amodio will provi
de a brief overview of the theoretical underpinnings for this approach and
will present an example on how to apply the theory.
