The aviation industry has a multi-dimensional effect on the global economy. Some examples of these effects include, role of industry in global trade; the large number of people who are either working directly or indirectly in the industry; the amount of energy that is being used by the industry, the number of people who are traveling by air for leisure and/or business; the environmental impact (noise, pollution, etc.) of the industry; and the safety and security impact on the global scale. The Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA’s) Next Generation (NextGen) program is a collection of research activities with the overall goal of improving operation. Over the past five years, the Next generation Applied Research (NEAR) laboratory, has been involved on number of NextGen projects.
