Topic: The Theory of Effective Systems Engineers

Speaker: Steve Mathe & Zach Douglas, Harris Corporation

About the Presentation:
What makes a good Systems Engineer? Can we predict the success of an aspiring Systems Engineer? What are the traits and characteristics that will make a systems engineer successful? These and other questions are the subject of Atlas: The Theory of Effective Systems Engineers developed by Stevens Institute of Technology’s Helix research team (sponsored by U.S. Department of Defense). As a participating industry member of the Atlas study review team, Steve Mathe from Harris will present an overview of the Atlas study along with insight into how the Atlas theory is being applied in industry.

About the Speakers:
Steve Mathe is a Senior Systems Engineering Manager for the Space and Intelligence Systems Segment of Harris Corporation.  He is also the Systems Engineering Vertical Lead, leading a team of 10 systems engineering managers committed to the corporate-wide development, training, process improvement and advancement of the SE discipline. Throughout his 35 year career, Steve has held roles as digital, analog and optical designer, IPT lead, Systems Engineer, Project Engineer, Advanced Programs Engineer and Chief Systems Engineer. Steve is a member of INCOSE and NDIA, and is Chair Emeritus and senior member of the Michigan Tech Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering External Advisory Committee.

Zach Douglas is a systems engineer in the Electronics Systems Segment of Harris Corporation.  He is currently serving as the Chief Systems Engineer for a pair of programs in Harris’s Avionics Business Unit delivering hardware to the US Navy.  He hold a Masters of Systems Engineering from FIT in addition to a Masters of Mechanical Engineering from Georgia Tech and a Bachelors of Mechanical Engineering from Vanderbilt University.  In the past he has served as a mechanical design engineer, IPT lead, and subcontracts technical lead in both the avionics and space electronics domains.  Prior to joining Harris, Zach was a research assistant at Wright Patterson AFB performing research  on the flow characteristics in the ignition cavity of scramjet engines and at Georgia Tech performing research on acoustically enhanced boiling heat transfer with applications in high-heat flux and microgravity electronics cooling. He has been a member of the local INCOSE chapter for two years.

Location - Finnet at 1135 W. NASA Blvd, Suite 200, Melbourne FL.
The building is on the SW corner of the intersection of Woody Burke and NASA Blvd, where there is a traffic light. It is the white building with a blue roof and blue trim that is closest to NASA Blvd.  Park in the back parking lot off of Woody Burke and enter through the back entrance (there is only one back door). Once you enter the building you will see the training room through the glass wall, where the meeting is.

Note that mapping programs (e.g., Google Maps) and perhaps GPS may not show this location correctly - but they will get you close enough to use the directions above.

On-line Access:
This is a new location for us, so we are not sure if there will be on-line access for this meeting.  Give it a try.
