Topic: Big Data - A Systems Engineering Perspective

Speaker: Scott Tilley, Florida Institute of Technology

About the Presentation:
Forget about gigabytes - we’ve entered the “big data” era of yottabytes: 10^24 bytes, or 1 trillion terabytes. The technical term used to describe this much data is “ginormous.” The world is producing data at an amazing rate. The question is: what do to with it? Predictive analytics at scale are a very real concern for systems engineers already, and in the coming years the challenge will only grow. This talk describes the current big data landscape, provides an overview of some of the tools available to manage massive datasets, and discusses some of the possible impacts of big data on systems engineers in the near future.

About the Speaker:
Scott Tilley is a professor at the Florida Institute of Technology, where he is director of computing education. He’s also president of the Big Data Florida user group (http://www.bigdataflorida.org/). He writes the weekly “Technology Today” column for the Florida Today newspaper (Gannett). He is an ACM Distinguished Lecturer. He is the author of several books, including "Testing iOS Apps with HadoopUnit: Rapid Distributed GUI Testing" (Morgan & Claypool, 2014) and the forthcoming "Systems Analysis & Design" (11th Ed) (Cengage, 2016)..

Location - Finnet at 1135 W. NASA Blvd, Suite 200, Melbourne FL.
The building is on the SW corner of the intersection of Woody Burke and NASA Blvd, where there is a traffic light. It is the white building with a blue roof and blue trim that is closest to NASA Blvd.  Park in the back parking lot off of Woody Burke and enter through the back entrance (there is only one back door). Once you enter the building you will see the training room through the glass wall, where the meeting is.

Note that mapping programs (e.g., Google Maps) and perhaps GPS may not show this location correctly - but they will get you close enough to use the directions above.

On-line Access:
This is a new location for us, so we are not sure if there will be on-line access for this meeting.  Give it a try.
