There is a special tour of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) Very Large Antenna Array scheduled on April 4 from 11:15am to 2:15pm on site, the day before the Socorro Systems Summit starts (April 5-6).

This tour is free, but registration HERE is required for head count.

Allow an hour and 15 minutes for travel from Socorro and assembly at the NRAO site – so must leave Socorro in your own transportation (or car pool) by 10:00am. You can arrive back in Socorro by 3:30 in time for the 4:00pm SEP exam, if you are taking that.

Info on the NRAO Very Large Array is at https://public.nrao.edu/visit/very-large-array complete with location and map for traveling to the site.

Lunch will not be provided, so eat an appropriate breakfast and/or take some power bars or some such.

There are Rules to be observed:

  1. If we are able to do an antenna climb, all climbers must have enclosed-toe shoes (no sandals).
  2. Cell phones, tablets, and other personal electronic devices should be turned off before arrival at the site.  Photographic devices may be used, but if they have WIFIHERE or Bluetooth capabilities, those data transfer functions must remain off at all times while on site. Devices may be turned on to take pictures, but then should be turned off again each time. "Airplane Mode" is not an alternative.
  3. Jackets are encouraged. It can be quite cold & windy.
  4. You will be at 7,000 feet altitude. If you have any breathing (lung) or heart problems they might be aggravated by thin air.
