Addressing global challenges requires integrating emotional intelligence (EI) with systems thinking to develop inclusive and sustainable solutions. This study examines how a systems-thinking approach fosters EI in engineering students. Conducted in a Spring 2024 undergraduate complex systems course in the United States, the study involved 55 senior engineering students working in teams on United Nations–defined global challenges. Using project-based learning and thematic analysis, the findings show significant growth in students’ empathy, collaboration, cultural sensitivity, and trust-building. The results highlight the value of integrating emotional intelligence and systems thinking in engineering education.
