In response to concerns within the field of systems engineering about the overuse and possible misuse of the term ‘systems‘, this paper presents an in-depth analysis of current schemes for classifying systems and proposes a scheme of nine classes that is simple, intuitive, and focuses on man-made systems. The author’s expectation is that individuals who are interested in the field of systems will communicate more effectively by qualifying systems and speaking of specific types of systems instead of speaking of systems in general.
