The present paper aims to give an overview of the state-of-the-art in Requirements Engineering (RE) based on a wide collection of publications from recent years, and focuses specifically on some advanced areas that need to be further explored in the future. Those areas addressed here are the use of ontologies and UML in RE, the coverage of non-functional requirements, interfaces to other engineering disciplines and other functions, as well as RE in the context of corporate wide improvement initiatives such as CMMI and Lean Enterprise Value.
