To support system maintenance, most deployed systems require some level of fault detection and fault isolation (FD/FI), often expressed as a percentage of faults detected, with a given rate or confidence-level of fault isolation to a single, replaceable unit. In contrast to the usual method of allocating the identical FD or FI requirements to every replaceable unit, we propose a revised allocation method that optimizes system effectiveness (satisfying requirements for minimum cost).
