For years, the avionics systems have been implemented via Line Replaceable Units (LRU) where each LRU is dedicated to one avionics function, leading to huge avionics costs as more and more functions were embedded. In the late 80’s, came the idea of Integrated Modular Avionics (IMA) where generic “platforms” would be shared by several “applications“.
