There are a number of reasons why new types of segmentation of railway systems are worthy of consideration, e.g.: New technology, particularly applied to communications and computing, Operational economies and improvements to the recovery from disruption provided by the centralisation of control of railways, The impact of traction power supply on both the future environment and on the diminishing fossil fuel sources, Major changes in methods of funding large railway projects, The extensive use of Outsourcing of maintenance and other services, The vision that railways are part of an integrated transport system implying a need to take a flexible approach to the developing external interfaces. The implications of these, together with the increasing emphasis on safety and the railway customers needs has resulted in a re-evaluation of the traditional approach to railway system architecture.
