To date, the majority of engineers in UK industry have acquired their qualifications and skills from a ‘traditional’ engineering education, and tend to specialise in a particular ‘branch’ or discipline of engineering or science. Developing the breadth as well as depth needed by Systems Engineers has traditionally only been achievable over a long period of time, especially in the Aerospace and Defence sector where lifecycles of complex systems and platforms can be as long as 50 years.
