This paper provides a basic background in chaos and complexity theory and shows systems engineers how to improve the way they work in accordance with their increased awareness of the complex nature of systems, enterprises, and the environment. As systems and the enterprises in which they are developed become increasingly complex, systems engineering as learned and taught in the twentieth century should be supplemented by principles learned in the new sciences of complexity and chaos.
