The nature of systems engineering has changed in the last quarter century because of the increasing presence of software in systems. This paper describes the adaptations that systems engineers should make to their skills and approaches in order to engineer software-intensive systems better, and the places where systems engineers need to reinforce what continues to be useful about traditional systems engineering.
