This paper describes an internal capability assessment against EIA/IS-731 expanded to cover a range of engineering disciplines1 – namely software, hardware and logistics engineering – in addition to Systems Engineering. It also compares the outcomes, in terms of resources and result, with a subsequent “full-blown” external assessment against the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) CMMI model, and concludes that internal assessments can, in certain circumstances, provide valuable results at a fraction of the cost of formal assessments.
