This paper is based on application of an approach to globally unique item identification that fully integrated into the design, development, manufacture, use and disposal of a system will revolutionize the business processes of the United States Department of Defense (DoD). As this approach becomes embedded in the Department’s business practices and “flowed down” to Prime Contractors and Suppliers it will revolutionize item marking and use much like the Universal Product Code (UPC) did for consumer goods.
