A key problem of systems engineering is how to break down a system into its principal subsystems or components and their interfaces. The traditional approach relies on intuition & past experience, both are heavily influenced by the conventional taxonomy of academic disciplines (mechanics, aerodynamics, electronics, economics, etc).
