This paper assesses two key elements of systems architecting: methodologies and heuristics, as they are applied to the concept design of a new high-volume, discrete part assembly production system. A description of the system is provided, and then attention is focused on four major areas in the design: human factors design, system structure development, assembly scope definition, and system operating principles.
