The SW-CMM, which has been used to assess software engineering development processes within Thomson-CSF, has demonstrated the suitability of staged models for assisting in the development of improvement action plans following an appraisal. Existing system engineering models are based upon a continuous architecture, which has been found to be less adept at focusing improvement activities following appraisals.
